“MBTA Orange Line Service Suspended: Shuttle Buses and Alternative Travel Options”

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced the suspension of Orange Line service between North Station and Oak Grove on weekends, and between North Station and Wellington on weekdays. The suspension will take place from June 24th to 30th, with the aim of supporting MassDOT’s Maffa Way/Mystic Avenue Bridge Superstructure Replacements project.

During the weekend shutdown, free and accessible shuttle buses will be available, making all stops between North Station and Oak Grove. To provide alternative travel options, the MBTA encourages riders to consider the Haverhill Commuter Rail Line, which offers fare-free service between Oak Grove, Malden Center, and North Station. However, regular fares should be purchased beyond Oak Grove.

Similarly, during the service suspension on weekdays, shuttle buses will make all stops between Wellington and North Station. Wellington and North Station will have free fares, with the fare gates open. Again, riders are encouraged to utilize the Haverhill Commuter Rail Line for fare-free service between Oak Grove, Malden Center, and North Station. Regular fares should be purchased beyond Oak Grove.

To ensure commuters have all the necessary information, the MBTA has provided detailed information about alternative travel options on their website, including bus shuttle stop locations. This allows riders to plan their journeys accordingly and minimize disruptions caused by the service suspension.

The bridge superstructure replacements project is a significant undertaking by MassDOT. It aims to replace two deteriorated bridge superstructures while also improving bicycle, pedestrian, and transit facilities in the area. By taking advantage of the service suspension, the MBTA will also perform essential Track Improvement Program work. This includes track and tie upgrades, enabling the removal of speed restrictions between Community College and Sullivan Square. In addition to track improvements, crews will carry out signal work and station amenity upgrades. These upgrades encompass new lighting installations, painting, tiling, power washing, and more.
