Debris Falls from MassArt Building in Boston

Police in Boston have cordoned off a section of road near Huntington Avenue after debris from a building at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) fell onto the area. The incident occurred when a structure hanging over an entrance collapsed, causing large chunks of insulation and other items to scatter along part of Evans Way and the campus.

Damage Caused by Extreme Weather

According to a statement from MassArt, the Tower building’s exterior sustained damage due to the extreme weather conditions in the city. This resulted in falling debris and a large hole in an exterior ceiling. The college emphasized that the damage was isolated to one area on Evans Way and no injuries were reported. As a precautionary measure, activities on adjacent floors of the building were relocated to a different building on campus.

Near Miss for Postal Worker

Witnesses at the scene reported that a postal worker narrowly avoided being hit by the falling debris. Adam Savje, a MassArt worker, stated that the mailman had entered the building just seconds before the collapse occurred. Fortunately, no classrooms or interior spaces were affected, and the incident was limited to the floor.

Building Deemed Safe After Inspection

Following visits from the state building inspector and engineers, MassArt confirmed that the affected building was found to be safe. The college’s priority remains the safety of its community, and staff continue to monitor the situation.
