Walmart Announces Training Programs and Bonuses for Hourly Workers to Combat Skilled Trade Shortage

Retail giant Walmart is taking steps to address the shortage of skilled trade workers and improve the working conditions for its associates. The company announced several changes, including training programs, certifications, and bonuses for hourly workers across its U.S. stores.

One of the key initiatives is the launch of the “Associate to Technician pipeline program” under the Walmart Academy. This program aims to create pathways for associates to fill critical roles in stores and supply chain facilities, such as facilities maintenance, refrigeration, and HVAC, reliability, and automation technician roles. These jobs pay between $19 and $45 per hour and offer opportunities for career growth.

To help associates advance in their careers, Walmart is offering more than 50 skills certificates that can be completed in four months on average. These certificates can fast-track associates into higher-paid positions like pharmacy technicians, opticians, and software engineers.

Walmart plans to fast-track front-line associates into approximately 100,000 higher-paying jobs that are in demand over the next three years. This initiative aims to provide better opportunities for career advancement within the company.

In addition to training programs and certifications, Walmart is also providing bonuses for its hourly store workers. Full and part-time hourly store associates who have been with Walmart for one year will be eligible for these bonuses. The longer an associate stays with the company, the higher their bonus potential, up to $1,000 per year.
