Leon Edwards upset by Colby Covington’s insensitive use of his dad’s death

Leon Edwards Defeats Colby Covington in Emotionally Charged UFC Welterweight Title Defense

Leon Edwards emerged victorious in a highly anticipated rematch against Colby Covington for the UFC welterweight title at UFC 296. The reigning champion secured a dominant five-round unanimous decision victory, with all three judges scoring the bout 49-46 in favor of Edwards.

Emotional Victory for Edwards

During a post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Edwards expressed the emotional significance of his title defense. He revealed that Covington had made derogatory comments mocking the death of his father, who was tragically murdered in a London nightclub when Edwards was just 13 years old.

Edwards, a 32-year-old Englishman of Jamaican descent, shared, “This was an emotional fight for me. This guy used my dad’s death as entertainment, he used my dad’s murder as entertainment. It took a lot for me to calm down, stay focused, and come into this fight. I spoke to my coaches, spoke to my mum, and I kind of just shut it down.”

The champion further expressed his devastation over Covington’s comments, stating, “To this day, it still breaks my heart that he was murdered. [Covington] said [my dad] should burn in hell. He’s a great competitor, but he’s just a dirty human being.”

Overcoming Emotional Turmoil

Edwards elaborated on the difficulty he faced in controlling his emotions throughout the fight. He admitted to feeling anger and shaking even during the weigh-ins. However, he sought guidance from his mother and coaches, who advised him to focus on himself and not let Covington’s provocations affect his performance.

Edwards shared, “Obviously, what he said was f–ked up, but I just tried to switch it off and go out there and do my job.”

UFC President Condemns Covington’s Comments

UFC President Dana White also expressed his disapproval of Covington’s remarks. White acknowledged that Covington’s attack on Edwards’ family was deeply disturbing and emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable. He stated, “When you start going after family, whether it’s the kids, the wife, the parents, whatever, it’s just such a nasty thing to do.”

White also highlighted the nature of the sport, where fighters often engage in heated verbal exchanges but ultimately move on after the fight concludes.

Impressive Record for Edwards

With this victory, Leon Edwards improved his professional record to 22 wins and 3 losses. He initially claimed the UFC welterweight title with a spectacular head kick knockout against former champion Kamaru Usman in August of last year. Edwards successfully defended his title in a rematch against Usman earlier this year.

Covington’s Recent Struggles

Colby Covington, on the other hand, suffered his fourth loss in his professional career, bringing his record to 17 wins and 4 losses. This defeat marks his third loss in his last five fights.

The highly anticipated rematch between Edwards and Covington showcased Edwards’ resilience and determination in the face of personal attacks. With this victory, Edwards solidifies his position as the reigning UFC welterweight champion and continues to make his mark in the world of mixed martial arts.
