Celebrating 20 Years of Same-Sex Marriage in Massachusetts
Twenty years have passed since the momentous day when Massachusetts issued its first same-sex marriage licenses. This significant milestone was marked by couples like Mike Horgan and Ed Balmelli, who celebrated their 20-year wedding anniversary on this momentous occasion. On May 17, 2004, they became one of the seven gay couples who sued the state for the right to marry, tying the knot on the very same day that same-sex marriage was legalized in Massachusetts.

He notes that while nowadays, people simply congratulate couples getting married, in the early days, it was seen as a novelty. “Back then, it was, ‘Oh, it’s going to be a gay wedding,'” Balmelli recalls. The opposition to same-sex marriage was palpable at the time, with then-Governor Mitt Romney openly opposing the court’s decision.
Horgan describes the fight for gay marriage as a civil rights movement of its time, expressing pride in the achievement. “Gay marriage was the civil rights movement at the time, and we were able to achieve that,” he asserts. The struggle for recognition and equality has paved the way for progress and acceptance within society.
To honor this historic milestone, a special event took place at the Arlington Street Church in Boston. This venue holds significance as it hosted some of the first legal same-sex weddings in the state. Former Governor Deval Patrick, who has publicly shared that his daughter is gay, headlined the event. Patrick spoke passionately about his daughter’s impact on his own understanding of love and emphasized that “love is love.”
Massachusetts, a state known for its progressive stance, is now led by Governor Maura Healey, the country’s first openly lesbian governor. In a message to the couples, Governor Healey assured them, “You will always be loved, welcome, and celebrated here in Massachusetts.” Her words reflect the inclusive nature of the state and its commitment to equality.
