3 Ways to Quickly Determine if Your Date is a Narcissist

Identifying Narcissists on a First Date: Expert Advice

A psychotherapist based in Austria has revealed three subtle ways that narcissists can reveal their true nature on a first date. Dr. Alina Kastner emphasizes the importance of gradually getting to know someone to protect against falling into the manipulation or trap of a narcissistic individual. She warns that narcissists can be extremely persuasive and captivating, using their charm to mask their true intentions and manipulative nature.

Dr. Kastner’s TikTok video on narcissism warning signs has gained significant attention, with 2.4 million views since its posting last month.

Beware of Love Bombing

Love bombing, the tactic of bombarding someone with compliments and gifts, is the first warning sign that Dr. Kastner advises people to be cautious of. While it may create a sense of euphoria and make someone feel special, it is often a manipulation tactic to establish a strong emotional connection quickly. Instead, a genuine connection should make someone feel calm, safe, and settled.

Engaging in superficial conversation instead of getting to know someone on a deeper level is another warning sign of narcissism, according to Dr. Kastner.

Saying You’re the One on Date One

Narcissists may claim that their date is their soulmate or perfect match very early on, even on the first date. This tactic is designed to create a deep connection, but it is often insincere. Narcissists are skilled at mirroring their date’s desires and presenting themselves as what their date wants in a partner, even if it’s not genuine.

Too Much Enthusiasm

Over-the-top behavior should not be mistaken as a sign of genuine interest. Feeling swept away by intense emotions and attention from a narcissist can easily lead to being deceived. The narcissist aims to create an emotional rollercoaster, keeping their date hooked and more likely to overlook potential red flags.

If things seem to be moving too quickly, it is also a cause for concern. Narcissists may push for rapid emotional and physical intimacy to establish a quick “deep connection” and manipulate and control their date.

It is important to be cautious if things seem “too good to be true.” Dr. Kastner advises taking a step back and evaluating the situation objectively, even if it is challenging when feeling a strong connection. Another relationship expert warns that when a narcissist says “I love you” early on, it may be a control tactic and a warning sign of potential cheating.
