Jeep Unveils 2024 Wagoneer S EV as the First All-Electric SUV for the U.S.

Jeep, the quintessential American SUV brand owned by Stellantis, has announced the release of its first all-electric SUV for the U.S., the 2024 Wagoneer S. Priced at approximately $72,000, the vehicle is set to go on sale this fall. Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa described it as a significant milestone in the brand’s history and emphasized its global appeal, as it is the first electric vehicle designed and built in North America for worldwide distribution.

Jeep’s Transition to Electrification

Filosa acknowledged that Jeep is currently undergoing a transition like many other automotive brands, involving a shift towards electrification. Despite slower-than-expected electric vehicle adoption rates in the U.S., Filosa expressed confidence in consumer adoption due to Jeep’s diverse lineup, which will continue to offer traditional gas-powered SUVs, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) starting next year.

Impressive Performance and Charging Capabilities

The Launch Edition of the Wagoneer S will feature a 400-volt, 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack capable of more than 300 miles on a single charge. With 600 horsepower and 617 pound-feet of torque, it can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Additionally, it boasts rapid charging capabilities, with the ability to charge from 20% to 80% in just 23 minutes using a DC Fast charger.

Trailhawk Off-Road Performance Concept

Alongside the Wagoneer S, Jeep also revealed a Trailhawk off-road performance concept of the EV. Filosa expressed hope that it would soon become a product, indicating Jeep’s commitment to expanding its electric lineup beyond the Wagoneer S.

Price Range and Future Models

The starting price for the Wagoneer S EV is $71,995, placing it between the gas-powered Wagoneer and the more luxurious Grand Wagoneer. Additionally, Filosa confirmed that Jeep plans to release less expensive models of the Wagoneer S approximately six months after the Launch Edition. He also announced the introduction of a new midsize SUV next year to replace the discontinued Cherokee.

Furthermore, in 2025, Jeep will release electric and extended-range versions of the traditional gas-powered Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. This technology, which utilizes an engine as a gas-powered generator in addition to EV batteries, is expected to debut on the upcoming Ram Ramcharger pickup truck.

Stellantis’ U.S. EV Offensive

The release of the Wagoneer S marks the beginning of Stellantis’ EV offensive in the U.S., with plans to introduce six to eight all-electric vehicles this year. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares emphasized the vast opportunities in the U.S. market and described the shift to electrification as a cost-cutting exercise to ensure profitability.

Jeep’s Success in Electrification

Jeep has already found success in the electrification space, with PHEVs accounting for 17.5% of its sales this year. Filosa highlighted that Jeep has been a leader in PHEVs in the U.S., with its Wrangler and Grand Cherokee “4xe” SUVs contributing significantly to Stellantis’ total PHEV U.S. sales last year, which reached nearly 143,000 units.

Unique Design and Sustainable Materials

The Wagoneer S features a modern interpretation of Jeep’s iconic seven-slotted grille that is no longer necessary for cooling purposes. The vehicle’s exterior also includes a large “R-Wing” spoiler to enhance aerodynamics without compromising its rugged appearance. Inside, the Wagoneer S offers more than 45 inches of screens and incorporates sustainable materials such as metal and fake leather. Notably, wood and chrome have been excluded from the design to make the vehicle more sustainable and appealing to younger buyers.
